WOVEN JEWELLERY

The climate change has become a global concern over the last few decades. Besides, these climatic changes which affect life on the earth in various ways and are having various impacts on the ecosystem and ecology. The ocean level is rising, glaciers are melting, CO2 in the air is increasing, forest and wildlife are declining and the marine life is also getting disturbed due to these changes. This project is an attempt to raise awareness by designing woven jewellery which is made completely by sustainable, recycled or/and up-cycled materials like, jute threads, natural yarn, cloth strips, plastic strips, newspaper, etc.

The jewellery emulates the three main effects of climate change; i.e., rise in sea level, rise in temperature and change in precipitation pattern through different colour palettes. There are three different sets of jewellery for three different effects mentioned above. Each set contains a pair of earrings, a pendant and a bracelet or an anklet.

Rise in sea level

A set of woven accessories inspired by environmental changes, including earrings and pendants in blue, orange, and dark tones, arranged beside leaves and twine. The blue gradient represents the rising sea level, while the orange gradient symbolizes increasing temperatures.
Side-by-side comparison showing a digital illustration with an orange gradient over a dark blue background on the left, and a woven textile piece on the right replicating the illustration. The woven piece displays an orange gradient transitioning into blue, symbolizing the rise in sea levels due to global warming.

This composition expresses the rise in sea level by a very slight gradient of blue and an orange gradient in the background. The orange gradient depicts the rise in temperature which leads to the rise in sea level.

Rise in temperature

A display of handmade circular woven jewelry set on a natural background. The jewelry, including two earrings and a pendant, showcases a gradient from yellow to red, symbolizing warmth. The pieces are arranged alongside dried leaves and natural fibers, enhancing their earthy and handmade appeal
A split image showing a gradient circle on the left, transitioning from yellow to red, representing warmth and heat, and a close-up of the woven earrings and pendant on the right. The jewelry pieces are arranged to highlight the circular form, emulating the shape of the Earth, with vibrant yellow to red colors that evoke a sense of warmth.

The yellow to red gradient screams warm and hot and depicts exactly the same. The circular form emulates the shape of the Earth.

Change in precipitation pattern

A flat lay composition featuring handwoven jewelry pieces inspired by the theme of irregular rainfall. The items include a pair of earrings, a bracelet, and a necklace. The jewelry combines blue and grey tones to depict clear skies blending with dark clouds. Natural elements such as leaves and twine are also placed around the jewelry, reinforcing the theme.
A split view showcasing the inspiration and final woven piece. On the left is a gradient graphic representing a clear sky merging with scattered dark clouds, symbolizing irregular rainfall. On the right is a close-up of the handwoven necklace from the first image, which mirrors the graphic’s colors and texture, capturing the essence of unexpected weather patterns. The necklace features fringed ends, enhancing its natural, rustic appeal.

This composition emulates the clear sky getting overpowered with the dark clouds. Irregular and unexpected rainfall is the key theme of this composition.
